RPM Top 10 & Pick of the Week - 9.26.2007
By Brian Holst on Fri, Sep 28th, 2007 1:08 am
Hey folks! Another week has come and gone, so it's time for the weekly RPM Pick of the Week and Top 10 List!

RPM Pick of the Week - 9.26.2007

Artist: Cassius

Album: 15 Again

RIYL: Daft Punk, Stardust, Groove Armada

Recommended Tracks: "Toop Toop" & "Rock Number One"

The Skinny: For nearly as long as Daft Punk has been rocking french dancefloors, so too has Cassius done the same with their own take on vocally-driven electronic music. However, their newest release, "15 Again", does not come with the same level of recommendation as previous weeks' picks. "Toop Toop" is, by far, the standout track on the album: a single that has been heard in clubs around the world for over a year now. It's a sure-fire hit. Other tracks are solidly crafted, but lack the immediate accessibility of other artists. And while one might think that their collaboration with super-producer Pharrell ("Eye Water") would be the album's home run, it's actually somewhat of a foul ball--and all due to the overly Earth-conscious lyrics. "Little Children say their prayers / But their parents don't say theirs / Look at your life now"? "They discovered nuclear power / Not for the best, but for the worst / For what happens makes my heart hurt"? Thanks Pharell... now I don't want to dance.

RPM Top 10 - 9.26.2007

1. Simian Mobile Disco, "Attack Decay Sustain Release"
2. Calvin Harris, "I Created Disco"
3. Justice, "Cross"
4. New Young Pony Club, "Fantastic Playroom"
5. Digitalism, "Idealism"
6 The Chemical Brothers, "We Are The Night"
7. Ulrich Schnauss, "Goodbye"
8. Cassius, "15 Again"
9. VHS or BETA, "Brings on the Comets"
10. Maps, "We Can Create"

Remix of the Week: Feist, "1234 (Van She Technologic Remix)"
RPM Picks of the Week
By Brian Holst on Thu, Sep 27th, 2007 1:45 pm
Welcome to the RPM Section! I'll be giving you weekly updates with everything from Picks of the Week to brand spankin' new artists, remixes, and other news.

Without further ado, here are this week's and last week's picks of the week, respectively:

Pick of the Week - 9.19.2007

Artist: Simian Mobile Disco

Album: Attack Decay Sustain Release

RIYL (Recommended If You Like): Justice, Daft Punk, Digitalism

Recommended Tracks: "I Believe", "Hustler", "It's The Beat", "Hot Dog", & "I Got This Down"

The Skinny: Dark and textured, funky and sexy, the aggressive beats of Simian Mobile Disco make this one of 2007's best electronic albums. Tracks range from pulsating instrumentals ("Sleep Deprivation") to vocals that evoke children's songs ("Hot Dog") and songs about stealing from a record store ("Hustler"). "Attack Decay Sustain Release" achieves a cohesive quality, despite its diversity. They sum it up best: it's the beat--forget about your seat.

Pick of the Week 9.12.2007

Artist: Calvin Harris

Album: I Created Disco

RIYL: Mylo, LCD Soundsystem

Recommended Tracks: "The Girls", "Acceptable in the 80s", "Disco Heat", "Vegas"

The Skinny: Is the titular nature of 23-year-old Calvin Harris' debut LP brazenly cocky, or just tongue-in-cheek? Judging from the music video for "The Girls", it's a bit of both--and it's what makes "I Created Disco" so refreshing. Upbeat, catchy and oozing accessibility in the mold of fellow Scotsman Mylo, "I Created Disco" is one of this year's best kept electro secrets.
